On douchebaggery and phones
I’m not ashamed to admit I like my douchier tendencies. I like going to the market, stopping at the Starbucks kiosk for a latte and shopping the perimeter of the store because I like to pretend doing that keeps me healthy. While drinking a drink that’s mostly non-organic milk tinged with artificial sweetener. After driving my lazy ass to the market.
I use a Bluetooth earpiece. I don’t NEED to, there’s no law that says handsets are illegal while driving, I have a perfectly functional set of earbuds with an inline mic (aside: I say things like “inline mic”), and truth be told, I’m no better a driver with the earpiece than with the handset. And yet I still wear it, because the one I have looks cool and it frees up my hands.
I have an iPhone, which over the last year has led to alternating feelings of douchebagginess and cult-of-Mac smugness. I stood (sat) in line for a good 8 hours to get that phone at release, and I was something like 5th or 6th in line when 6:00 rolled around and the AT&T store doors opened. 4GB, out of a) financial concerns and b) the realization that I keep my whole music collection on an iPod in my car AND on my MacBook, which at this point is fairly well attached to my hip, so I really only need enough music to get through a day or two before I get sick of it and switch it out. So now I’m at that point where I’m starting to regret the 4GB hardware because of - say it with me, nerds - APPS. I’m randomly adding and removing apps from my “Sync to iPhone” checklist because I can’t keep them all AND music AND pictures.
While speaking to Dave earlier this evening, I made the somewhat public admission that I may actually need to buy an iPhone 2. I could buy a 1st gen phone on eBay, but even when you add the extra $120/year for the 3G service (assuming it’s another year before iPhone 3 comes out), I’d be paying less for the iPhone 2. Everyone selling seems to think that we all want unlocked, jailbroken, or sets of 2 iPhone 1s, and the prices reflect that.
My current feeling on my iPhone 1 is that while it’s a little cramped in there memory-wise, I don’t feel like nearly as much of a douche using it now. I’d feel about twice to maybe three times as douchey using an iPhone 2 now that everyone, their mother AND their roommate has one. This makes me so sad right now.
