Why I (continue to) donate

2009 was a real bitch. There were some highs for me, but also some of the lowest of lows. I honestly could have flipped my shit more than a few times throughout the course of the year. But I didn’t. And it really is due in no small part to the work of Jesse Thorn and maximumfun.org.

The maxfun forum introduced me to some of the closest friends I have. Maxfuncon ‘09 made a lot of those screen names into real people. Jordan, Jesse, Go! kept me awkwardly stifling laughter in my cubicle to the point that my boss would think I was choking. The Sound of Young America broadened my horizons (and continues to do so). And seeing the Monsters of Podcasting at UCBNY in September, then moving the party to McManus with a bunch of other maxfunsters (and seeing Jeff Goldblum in the process of going from theater to bar) was one of the highlights of my fall (watching Jesse host a live taping of TSOYA [in my own hometown, even!] in a long, narrow, low-ceilinged room that was more like a jet than a hotel conference room was another).

I started donating in 2008 out of guilt. I kept donating in 2009 because it felt like something akin to Netflix - I’d pay a monthly fee and entertainment would regularly end up in my face. In 2010, I continue to donate because I can’t imagine not doing it (and because the question mark after “Vancouver’s top comedy podcast” needs to go).

I hope you’ll donate, too.
