The Great Gatsby (1925)

Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald

“It grieves me deeply that we Americans should take as our classic a book that is no more than a lengthy description of the doings of fops.”

From one-star Amazon.com reviews of classic novels

(I’m going to try to use the phrase “doings of fops” in at least three work emails today.)

Apparently that reviewer would rather have a lengthy description of the doings of homelesses or farmers or Draculas or Civil War-ers or pioneers as our classic. What else is a book but the descriptions of doings? I think that review is a fopist.
