Jason Chimera leaves a nifty drop pass for Alexander Semin who rips it past Henrik Lundqvist. It wasn’t enough today though. Caps fall to the Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden.

I’m sure you guys are totes sick of me blathering on about hockey, but you’ll get over it.

The drop pass is one of the most elegant sports “moves.” If you’re not a hockey fan, it will probably be hard to really get a grip on it in this clip until you get to the second replay. Basically, the the player who has the puck lifts his stick and beats it but good, “dropping” it (essentially just leaving it on the ice, where he either caught it or has decided it’s staying after either catching a pass or moving it up the ice from his defensive zone) for his teammate to pick up, and hopefully do something awesome. Its closest cousin, I’d say, is the no-look pass in basketball - it’s trust in your teammates, a masterful grasp on your playbook, instinct, grace, and aggressiveness, plus a measure of cockiness to be sure.

There’s a much clearer view of a beautiful drop pass here - at :03, Johansson (number 90) has the puck and leaves it on the ice for Ovechkin (number 8), who almost immediately picks it up and scores a sick)))ahahaha goal with it.

And there’s the beauty in not being a journalist - I could have just as easily linked to a clip of Malkin’s between-the-legs drop pass to Dupuis from September, but you will have to find that for yourself if you really want to see it.
